Mariano Alvarez
Dr. Mariano Alvarez is the co-founder and Chief Science Officer at Avalo, Inc., a biotechnology company using AI and evolutionary theory to accelerate crop development. Dr. Alvarez founded Avalo with his longtime friend, Brendan Collins, to address a shared concern for environmental issues in agriculture and a passion for technology and computation. He is a theoretical evolutionary biologist and computational geneticist.
After his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of South Florida, he was a researcher at Duke University and Wesleyan University, focused on how the environment and the genome interact to influence multilevel adaptive dynamics and evolutionary trajectories. Dr. Alvarez’s collaboration at Duke University with award winning professor Cynthia Rudin led to the development of novel interpretable machine learning techniques, which have now been incorporated into the core technology at Avalo.
Since February 2021, Alvarez has co-led the company through several funding rounds. Under his scientific leadership, Avalo has been recognized by CNN, TIME, and Statista as one of America's Top 250 GreenTech Companies and has established a robust pipeline of climate-resilient crop varieties that address critical market needs in water efficiency, nitrogen reduction, and yield optimization across cotton, sugarcane, and other high-value agricultural commodities.
